Retro Comforts in Shoreditch – A Student’s Tale
When I moved to Shoreditch I had nothing but a mattress. The kitchen had a dodgy kettle, but we built it piece by piece. New furniture is soulless, so we begged, borrowed and carried. I spotted a funky armchair on Brick Lane. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what gave it soul. Old accent chairs carry memory, and it fits our lifestyle. I’ve crashed into a leather sofa after a night out, and those seats carried us. Shoreditch is perfect for this life, and dealers live for it.
We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and the vintage armchairs carried scars I loved. we had to haggle, but it’s become the throne of the house. Ask around and you’ll hear it. It’s part of student life. Armchairs don’t mind if you fall asleep in them. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but real pieces stay alive. every dent becomes part of the flat. By the end of the year, the dodgy landlord fades away, but the mismatched set still makes you laugh.
When you start student life, forget the catalogue shine. Choose a funky accent chair and sofa chair, and watch it age with you.
